Caustics

Through refraction light rays bend as they pass through water and are then reflected onto the surface as distorted bright lines. Caustics describe the patterns of light that occur when light rays are reflected or refracted from a surface.

In our everyday life we often see caustics, commonly trough refractive caustics in water, however we most likely don’t pay much attention to the geometric patterns produced by such optical phenomenon. These images explore geometrical variations of caustics by shining light through two glasses with water and photographing the resultant geometries produced on a textured leather surface.
